Easy as ABC, See, Hear, Do

The bright colors, silly actions, and animal pictures make these books engaging for kids. The letters are not presented in alphabetical order, but rather in ease of learning to read. You are teaching your child the sound each letter makes, not the letter name. Your child will see the letter, hear the sound, and move their body, thereby making concepts age-appropriate and easier to retain.

The free placement test included below can help you decide which level to start with, but most young learners will start with level 1.

Phonics skills taught per level are:

Level One – uppercase letters

Level Two – lowercase letters

Level Three – blended beginning sounds

Level Four – blended ending sounds

Level Five – long vowels

Level Six – sight words. Uses some American sign language when they can

Level Seven – irregular sounds

The Learn to Read books are the heart of the program. In Levels 1 and 2, the 26 letters are presented in groups of four, followed by combining letters learned to make a list of words.

The first letter that kids will learn is “C.” There is a full-page picture with C…c…C with a cat with claws up in the air demonstrating the motion to be made, along with written instructions for the motion. Your student will curl their hands like claws and say the sound for “C.” Now, every time that they see the letter “C,” there will be a small icon to remind them of the sound to make. At the end, students try to read the words without the icons.

Curriculum and Activity Guides are currently available for Levels 1 and 2. There are 26 total lessons for each, one for each letter of the alphabet. Each lesson will take 20 minutes. Open-and-go lessons are easy to follow and give instructions from start to finish each day. Songs are sung to familiar tunes and instructions are given for how to present the letter of the day with the flashcards, writing practice, and coloring page. An enrichment page for every lesson includes crafts, games, activities, snack ideas, and book suggestions.

The Writing Practice workbooks give students the opportunity to learn to learn to write letters and eventually words. Instructional arrows and dotted lines help students with the proper formation of letters.

Other components include Coloring BooksABC Zoo Kid Readers for each level to build reading skills, and Flashcards for review and fluency. Single level Bundles include all components for each level.

The publisher has many free online resources such as songscrafts, and more. I think you will find this program to be an amazing resource for beginning phonics. It is a great option for homeschoolers, preschools, co-ops, speech language pathologists, and struggling readers!
